A Tradition
of Compassionate Care
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of
Newark exists to advance a mission of justice and compassionate care.
We trace the pursuit of our mission in Essex, Hudson, Union, and Bergen
counties to the scriptures and the prophets' cries for justice for the
widows, orphans, and strangers among us.
Catholic Charities was created as a witness to
the scriptural commands to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and
give hope to those in need. Faith in Jesus Christ puts the Christian in
communion with Him and His teachings about our obligations to assist and
protect the weak and vulnerable. We commit ourselves to respect the dignity
of others and their right to a decent standard of living, their right
to be educated, and their right to live in peace and freedom. Through
the work of our staff and volunteers, we strive to enhance the freedom
of every man, woman, and child we serve, helping them to live their lives
as fully as possible.
Catholic Charities' programs serve the very young,
the very old, and all in between. We seek to provide the necessities of
life to the homeless, the blessings of liberty to immigrants, and the
restoration of right relationships within families and within society.
We seek to provide a life with meaning to the disabled, isolated, and
lonely; a safety net to those in crisis; the hope of economic participation
to the marginalized and unemployed; and opportunities for the growth and
development of children and youth.
Love in pursuit of freedom is at the heart of
all we do at Catholic Charities. Every day we deal with the realities
of human existence. Through partnerships with the people we serve, we
empower them to pursue their personal call to freedom. More than just
providing services, more than merely acting out of charitable motivations,
we work to build the human assets of our community and, in so doing, to
promote a just society.
