Hudson YouthBuild

Program Design

The unique design of the Hudson YouthBuild (HYB) program combines the energy and intelligence of young adults with community development efforts in Hudson County and beyond.

The program assists both male and female at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 21 to complete their high school education, obtain training in the construction trades, and prepare for responsible and successful adulthood.

Eligible youth include:

  • Youth recently discharged from a youth correctional facility.
  • Youth recently discharged from the Hudson County Detention Center.
  • Youth on probation or parole.
Educational Design: The educational design of the program focuses on the attainment of a General Education Diploma (GED), the potential for higher education, and acquiring skills and certification in the construction trades.

Leadership Development: The program provides youth with meaningful opportunities to develop decision-making, problem solving, and negotiation skills.

Staffing and Program

The program is staffed by full-time certified teachers, vocational instructors certified by the National Center for Construction Education and Research, and professional caseworkers. Each enrolled youth develops an individual success plan and has a case manager who guides him or her from the beginning to the end of the program. Students attend 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 8 months (on average) and are paid a stipend for participation. Training is provided in classrooms and on job sites.

The program offers:
  • GED completion
  • Construction and carpentry training
  • Paid stipends
  • Job search and employment information
  • Placement in jobs or continuing education
  • Case management and life skills training leading to independence
  • Higher education opportunities
  • Community service
