Wills and Bequests

A bequest to Catholic Charities is a powerful way to express your support for our mission and your faith in the future of our organization. It enables you to pursue your giving interests, while at the same time allowing you to retain the flexibility you may need should your circumstances change.

To include Catholic Charities in your bequest designation, please review the following options with your tax and/or financial advisor and include the appropriate language in your will or trust:

Outright Bequest:
An outright bequest is received by Catholic Charities when the donor’s estate is settled. It can be in the form of a specific dollar amount, a specific percentage of the estate, or a specific asset, such as a security or real or personal property.

Language for your will:

Unrestricted Gift:
I give, devise, and bequeath to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, tax-identification number 22-2164120, the sum of $________ or _____ percentage of ________ [cash or real or personal property herein described] to be used for its general purposes.

Restricted Gift (to support a specific program or service):
I give, devise, and bequeath to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, tax-identification number 22-2164120, the sum of $________ (or) _____ percentage of ________ [cash or real or personal property herein described] to be used for ________ [name the program(s) and/or service(s) you wish to support].

Residual Bequest:
A residual bequest leaves all or a percentage of what remains of the estate after all payments have been made toward taxes, expenses, debts, and beneficiaries.

Language for your will:

Unrestricted Gift:
I give, devise, and bequeath to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, tax-identification number 22-2164120, _____ percent of the residue of my estate to be used for its general purposes.

Restricted Gift:
I give, devise, and bequeath to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, tax-identification number 22-2164120, _____ percent of the residue of my estate to be used for ________ [name the program(s) and/or service(s) you wish to support].

Contingent Bequest:
A contingent bequest is received by Catholic Charities only when the primary heir(s) do not survive the donor.

Language for your will:

Unrestricted Gift:
In the event that ________________ predeceases me, I give, devise, and bequeath his or her bequest or share to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, to be used for its general purposes.

Restricted Gift:
In the event that ________________ predeceases me, I give, devise, and bequeath his or her bequest or share to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, a tax-exempt organization, to be used for ________ [name the program(s) and/or service(s) you wish to support].

Codicil:
If you already have a valid will and would like to include a bequest for Catholic Charities, you may do so by making a “codicil” or amendment to your existing will. This may be an excellent way to modify your estate plans to reflect your present circumstances and charitable intentions while avoiding the time and cost of drafting a new will.
